Ex-Employees Suing Goldman Sachs "Boys Club" On Behalf Of All Women

Ex-Employees Suing Goldman Sachs "Boys Club" On Behalf Of All Women Back in 2010, former Goldman Sachs vice president Cristina Chen-Oster and former Goldman associate Shanna Orlich filed a lawsuit against the billion dollar banking firm claiming widespread gender discrimination. Among other things, they called it "a ‘boy’s club’ atmosphere, where binge drinking is common and women are either sexualized or ignored." And this week, Chen-Oster and Orlich announced that they are seeking class action status for their lawsuit. [ more › ]

Vice Rumored To Take Over Glasslands Space For New Offices

Posted: 02 Jul 2014 03:04 PM PDT

Vice Rumored To Take Over Glasslands Space For New Offices Vice Media, Rupert Murdoch's favorite NSFW hipster mag/HBO show/media conglomerate, seems to be continuing its reign of terror in Williamsburg, having just announced a move to a 60,000-square-foot space on South 2nd Street and Kent Ave. Scarier still, it seems like the "former industrial building" they're taking over is currently home to DIY venues Glasslands, Death By Audio and erstwhile 285 Kent, and though this hasn't been confirmed, it's pretty unsettling if it is true. Steaks With A Scene At SoHo's New Il Mulino Prime

Posted: 02 Jul 2014 02:09 PM PDT

Upscale Italian restaurant group Il Mulino recently added a steakhouse to their roster in Il Mulino Prime, which opened in SoHo earlier this month at the corner of West Broadway and Grand Street. It's a smallish space, though the white walls and large windows lend it an airy feeling, especially when a breeze comes through from the street. The monotone aesthetic—punctuated by ceramic "taxidermy" and poetic musings stenciled on the walls—gives the restaurant that "cool" vibe. To wit, no less than four notable persons were spotted dining on the evening of a recent press preview. [ more › ]

Newsstand Banned From Selling Coffee After Starbucks Moves In A tiny, unnamed kiosk could go out of business after the management at One Fordham Plaza has asked the newsstand, located in their rear lobby, to stop serving coffee and tea now that a Starbucks has moved into the building. Another outstanding kneel to corporate America! [ more › ]

Bushwick Artist Invites You To Stay In His Cage For $1 A Night

Posted: 02 Jul 2014 12:19 PM PDT

Bushwick Artist Invites You To Stay In His Cage For $1 A Night Last week, the internet briefly roused itself from its summertime hibernation when it was reported that you could stay in a jail cell for just $10 a night via AirBNB. The cage, which actually just costs a person $1 a night and is located in Bushwick, is a project by artist Miao Jiaxin—but faster than you can scream "Human-Sized Hamster Wheel," it was removed from AirBNB. There apparently is some serious demand for fantasy jail experiences, so Miao has now posted the listing on his Facebook. [ more › ]

Natural Fireworks Arriving Soon As NYC Finally Hits 90°

Posted: 02 Jul 2014 11:58 AM PDT

Natural Fireworks Arriving Soon As NYC Finally Hits 90° The heat is here! For the first time since 1985, and for only the 19th time since 1870, the temperature did not reach 90 degrees before July. That looks to change today as it is already 89 degrees and the abundance of tropical heat and humidity streaming northward should push this afternoon's high into the lower 90s. With an atmosphere this soupy showers or thunderstorms will be a possibility late in the afternoon and even more likely in the evening hours. Some of those storms could produce heavy downpours. Photos: Inside The Final Night At Lucky Cheng's

Posted: 02 Jul 2014 11:40 AM PDT

The news broke last week that iconic drag club Lucky Cheng's would shut its doors forever with a last hurrah dance party on Saturday during Pride weekend. We sent photographer Ellen Moynihan to give the gals one final glamor shot and document the end of an era in the city's drag history. While there, a manager revealed a possible Hail Mary for the club, telling us it "might not be closing," while on stage one of the drag queens dismissed the closing as a rumor. [ more › ]

The Oldest Phone Number In NYC

Posted: 02 Jul 2014 11:25 AM PDT

Back in the day, New York phone numbers didn't include a 212 or a 646 or a 917, they were based off of the name of the nearest telephone exchange. The Hotel Pennsylvania (at 7th Avenue and 32nd Street), for example, was given PE6-5000, which was connected to the Pennsylvania (PE) exchange, and served the area around Penn Station. Later, it became 736-5000 (the P and E changing to 7 and 3, respectively), and even later: 212-736-5000. And that remains their number today... it's tough to get rid of digits that Glenn Miller and his Orchestra immortalized. [ more › ]

NJ Not Sweating A Little Great White Shark Action

Posted: 02 Jul 2014 10:54 AM PDT

NJ Not Sweating A Little Great White Shark Action It'll take more than a few great white sharks near Cape May and Long Beach Island to keep beach lovers from the Jersey Shore this weekend. Laurie Krempa, a regular to the area, told CBS New York that she has no intention of changing her July 4th plans to visit the shore, and places her full trust in the probably teenaged, whistle-twirling lifeguards. Here's What You Can Do About The Rowdy Airbnb Hotel Next Door

Posted: 02 Jul 2014 10:28 AM PDT

Here's What You Can Do About The Rowdy Airbnb Hotel Next Door My tormentors come bearing Benny Benassi, heavy heels, and apologetic smiles. For the past six months I've been living below two illegal hotels. These guests stay in my Lower East Side tenement for the same reasons I do: it's convenient, comfortable, and relatively cheap. But the loud Australian accents bouncing off my fire escape, the rolling luggage that reliably scrapes my ceiling and skull on Sundays and Thursdays, and the sheepish shrugs I get from strangers who tell me they found their hotel room "on the internet" but curiously don't recall where, have turned my tiny sanctuary into an insane asylum. What can I do about it? As it turns out, not much. [ more › ]

Citi Bike To Be Bailed Out By Real Estate Interests

Citi Bike To Be Bailed Out By Real Estate Interests Faced with busted docks, faulty software, and a dearth of profit from 24-hour and 7-day users, Citi Bike, a success in terms of popularity, has been a failure where it counts. Its financial namesake won't grope between the couch cushions to support it, and De Blasio has declined to allot municipal funds for it either. So what happens to public projects that everyone wants and needs but refuses to fund? Private real estate to the rescue! [ more › ]

Video: Terrifying Food Truck Explosion Injures 12

Video: Terrifying Food Truck Explosion Injures 12 An enormous inferno engulfed a Philadelphia street yesterday when an industrial-sized propane tank exploded on board a food truck. The blast "sent the metal tank flying 50 feet into the backyard of a home as flames shot 200 feet into the air" at Wyoming and 3rd Street, according to NBC Philadelphia. "I heard a loud boom like a bomb," recalled Shaquille Glover. "The propane splashed all the way across the street on a pole. That's why the pole was on fire and people that were walking by got burned. A lady got burned on her back. Another lady got burned on her face. It was just the sounds of the screams. There was a good two minutes of screams before the cops even came." [ more › ]

Does NYC Have A Belligerent Bruncher Problem?

Does NYC Have A Belligerent Bruncher Problem? The Belligerent Bruncher might not actually own half of Manhattan, but the person who recorded his tirade says he's part of a larger problem. "I filmed them because this is one of a thousand incidents that have happened around there," the uploader says. "The week before they had to call an ambulance because someone got so drunk at one of these brunches they crapped themselves and had to be taken to the hospital." [ more › ]
