The show's producers approached the United Nations, and the 15 council members were asked whether they would allow the use of the chamber when the council wasn't in session, but Russia said "no," the diplomats said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were private.

According to The Cable, the reasoning behind Russia's decision is keeping the Security Council chamber available for unanticipated crises.

Thach likes to leave reviews, more akin to short stories, on bizarre Amazon products (like the aforementioned lube, Justin Bieber singing toothbrushes and fake vomit). But instead of merely trolling, he turns it into a creative writing exercise.

It all started when Amazon "recommended" he buy a $40,000 TV last November.

Current ISIS Conflict in Iraq, Syria, Has WWI Roots

The sweeping advance of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has given rise to a lively debate about who should bear ultimate responsibility for the disintegration of Iraq and Syria. On one hand, many commentators have pointed the finger at George W. Bush and Tony Blair who, they argue, as the architects of the 2003 invasion, fundamentally destabilized Iraq and ultimately led to the current crisis.

The ISIS jihadis themselves have made political capital out of their professed overthrow of the 1916 agreement between Britain and France that carved up the Ottoman Empire and created the somewhat artificial borders which now appear to have been transcended. Read more...

9 Ways to Stretch Your iPhone's Life When the End Is Near

Apple typically releases its next-generation iPhone in September of each year, sparking a nationwide effort in the months ahead for users to hold on to their dying, dwindling devices for as long as possible before upgrading.

It's not just a matter of wanting the newest toy from Apple; the shelf-life of smartphones is typically low, between 18 and 24 months. This means devices start to lag, shut down unexpectedly and do other funky things after about two years (not to mention mobile technology quickly becomes obsolete as new software and hardware hits the market).

Life in a city can be dirty, cramped and inefficient, and the way it's built can make those aspects even worse.

However, sometimes architects go beyond simply making functional spaces to create a more positive impact on their homes. From vertical gyms to man-made marshes, architectural design can build solutions to key urban problems.

Here are six projects that have made, or can make, a major difference

Citizens of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, recently observed an otherworldly sight — an illuminated man who appeared to be traipsing across the skyline.

The feat was made possible via strobe lights and a team of stuntmen clad in bespoke suits created by Hollywood costume designer Vin Burnham and technical director Adam Wright. A computer system using DMX software also wirelessly triggered the suits to light up on demand.

The overall effect is cool and different, and reflects well on the brand. "Strobe" is the latest in a series called "Amazing in Motion" that aims to celebrate objects in motion. Japan Says It Will Lift Some Sanctions on North Korea

TOKYO — Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Thursday, local time, that his government has decided to lift some of its sanction on North Korea.

The move is in return for North Korea's agreement to reinvestigate the fate of Japanese who were abducted by North Korean agents in the 1970s and 1980s.

In a brief statement to reporters, Abe didn't provide any details on which sanctions would be lifted. A formal decision could come at a cabinet meeting on Friday.

Japan bans port calls by any North Korean-flag vessels, all trade with North Korea and the entry into Japan of North Korean citizens. Tokyo has said that if its concerns are satisfied, it would allow more people exchanges, ease requirements to report money transfers to the North and raise limits on how much cash can be carried to the North. It would also allow North Korean ships to make port calls for humanitarian purposes. Read more...

But Moreno is not on a relentless hunt for the man of her dreams — she just wants to date. She began the project two weeks ago, and has already managed to go on more than 30 dates.

"I realized that I haven't been single the majority of my adult life," Moreno told Mashable. "When you date someone, you end up at home on the couch watching movies every night. That can be sweet, but you don't get to experience a whole lot. I thought it would be kind of fun to date around, and do all the stuff on my SF bucket list." Read more...

Google's Smarty Pins Game Tests Your Geography Knowledge

Google unveiled a fun new game this week that tests players' geography and trivia skills

Called "Smarty Pins" the game starts players off with 1,000 miles (or 1,609 kilometers if they're not based in the United States), and asks them to drop a pin on the city that corresponds with the correct answer to a given question. If the answer is incorrect, the player's miles are reduced by the distance the answer was off. For example, if the answer to a question was Philadelphia but the user chose New York City, Smarty Pins would subtract 94 miles from the total score. The goal is to correctly answer as many questions as possible before the number of miles reaches zero. Players can also gain bonus points if they answer in the first 10 seconds without using hints Read more...

Microsoft is reportedly working on a version of its Office productivity suite optimized for Android tablets.

The company is currently preparing a beta version, which will soon be tested with a select number of users, The Verge reported, and a full launch is planned for later this year. It appears the Android-tablet apps will debut before the touch version of Office for Windows, which Microsoft previously said would launch in 2015

Details of the initial test, including how many users will participate, are not yet clear. But it's possible Microsoft will draw from a pool of participants registered in its pre-release program. The program allows users who are interested in getting an early look at new software to sign up for a chance to be included in early beta tests prior to the official rollout. Read more...

BlaBlaCar first launched its ridesharing service in 2006. It allows drivers who are traveling between cities to offer seats in their car to others who need a ride

Unlike with Uber or Lyft, drivers don't profit from the rides they offer. Instead, drivers use the service to offset the cost of the trip while users tend to pay less for rides than they would when taking public transportation. Read more...
