Tired of having to open System Preferences to check that pesky "Use all F1, F2 etc. keys as standard function keys" to make your keyboard shortcuts to work correctly in Photoshop (and others)? Well I found a free script floating around the internet that has made my life, and workflow a lot easier. I want to share it with you Mac Photoshoppers out there, and hopefully we can save you some headaches.
Function Key Toggle with a Single Click from Jay Hilgert on Vimeo.
Step 1I'm not sure if I'm allowed to distribute the script itself because I didn't write it, so download the free script here: http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Utilities/Toggle-Function-Keys.shtml Step 2Double-click on the script and it should open up in Script Editor.app and it should look something like this: Step 3If you are using a newer version of OS X, like Leopard or Snow Leopard, you are going to have to make a small change to the script in order to make it work. Simply delete "& Mouse" in the 2 places "Keyboard & Mouse" appear in the script. In newer versions of OS X, they are separate panes in the System Preferences. (If you aren't sure you can just run the script. If you need to delete the Mouse part, you will get an error.) You can also just open System preferences and see if they are in fact separate panes Step 4Now all you have to do is, in Script Editor, go to File > Save As. Save it as an "Application" and name it whatever you want. Step 5Last part of the setup, in order for the script to work, you must go to System Preferences > Universal Access, and make sure "Allow access for assistive devices" is checked. (This enables a script to select a button, check a box, click on a tab, etc. Without it, scripts that you run cannot interact with elements of the system user interface) Step 6At this point, I made a custom Icon for my little toggle app. If you like the icon I used, you can download it by clicking on the icon below. In order to replace the icon, right click on the app and select "Show Package Contents." Then go to the resources folder and replace "applet.icns" with the one you downloaded here. Step 7Add the app you just created to your Apps folder, then put it in your dock for easy access and your done! You'll be toggling your Function keys in no time! And no more turning up your volume when you wanted to hit shift + F5 to do a fill, etc.. I hope this helps get rid of some headaches for you design guru's out there :) |
