Common Villains of Social Media - Infographic

I found this over at Search Engine Journal. Some good advice. Are there other "villains" besides these 8 antagonists? If you've encountered them, how do you handle the situation?

Collaboration + Competition = Contagious Creativity

The Philies' Roy Halladay pitched a heck of a ballgame last night. Only the 2nd no-hitter ever in post-season history. Monumental performance.

During one postgame interview, Halladay gave credit to his catcher, Carlos Ruiz no less than four times...in a matter of minutes.

In another interview, he talked about the other members of the pitching rotation and how, during September, they built each other up by going out and performing at a higher level - then cheering the next guy on towards better - there was a friendly competition.

Friendly competition, building off each other's success, allowing each (and at the same time all) to breakthrough barriers and rise above previous ceilings.

I think of the movie Heat with Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino - they fed off each other and made each other better.

I think of the Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa home run race of 1998.  They cheered each other on while in the midst of a fierce battle to beak a record (this was more competition than collaboration - but there was a collaborative spirit!)

Look, there are some folks that are in it all for themselves - always will be. Oh, they may wear a collaborative mask in public, but when the chips are down or the spotlight is on - they say "ME" or "I" or "MINE" instead of a "we" or "our."

You may find the collaboration only works for a season, but that season can setup the steps and stages for increased competitive creativity even after the collaboration stops:

"I think it'll probably scare him into doing something decent, and then he'll scare me into doing something decent, like that." - John Lennon on Paul McCartney's first solo album.

They're out there and always will be.  When you recgonize this, especially if it happens more than once, walk (run?).

But give collaboration a chance - even with competitors. Never mind the "me" attitude. "We" wins.

Collaboration + Competition = Contagious Creativity.
